美國是一個移民國家, 所有移民美國的人, 都有一個美國夢, 追逐一個“大蘋果(Big Apple)”而下的"賭注." 拋棄原來熟悉的生活, 而投入一個完全陌生的環境, 所為何來? 無非是一個改變原來不怎麼理想狀況的機會, 一個重新開始的機會. 美國第一代移民通常都是中下階層的人, 因此很多人以為美國是一個沒有文化的地方. 其實, 這是大錯特錯的想法; 完全忽略了處於社會底層的自由人, 為了翻身而打拼不懈的決心與能量. 在原來的社會裡, 他們幾乎完全沒有翻身的機會, 因為他們處處受打壓、排擠, 一旦來到了新大陸, 他們自由了, 他們可以毫不顧忌地為自己的未來打拼. 結果, 造就了廿世紀以來的美國“超級強權”. 這就是美國夢! 這就是大蘋果! 可見, 貧富不均不是問題, 沒有翻身的機會才是問題! 以下是自由女神像的詩文.
The Poem of the Statue of Liberty (自由女神像詩):
The title of the poem and the first two lines refer to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The poem talks about the millions of immigrants who came to the United States (many of them through Ellis Island at the port of New York). The "air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame" refers to New York City and Brooklyn, not yet consolidated into one unit in 1883.
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
唐山過台灣的台灣先民, 其實, 本質上與美國移民並沒有兩樣, 一樣是追逐一個新的生活, 一個重新開始的機會, 一個同樣的夢, 姑且也叫他做"台灣夢." 我們不希望幾百年來唐山來台先民, 加上千百年來原住民新民的努力, 完全成為泡影. 我的台灣夢, 只不過是台灣人能在世界上與所有的人一樣地抬頭挺胸, 一樣地理直氣壯; 不再是"亞細亞的孤兒," 不是"妾身不明的小媳婦," 因為台灣不是任何人的附庸! 不能給我們的子女這樣的正常國家地位, 是我們這一代的恥辱. 至於將來的台灣人要跟誰合併, 要跟誰結盟, 或是要跟誰統合或統一, 那是他們的選擇; 我們憑什麼要限縮他們選擇的權利!
I had a dream that one day I can stand upright and claim that we are free to make our own choices! 我有一個夢, 有一天我們能挺直腰桿大聲的宣示, 我們是自由人, 我們可以自由地, 隨心所欲地去做選擇, 不必受到共匪的牽制!
